I think that people tend to have a negative view of conflict
due to the fact they don’t know how to handle it. When individuals aren’t educated on conflict,
I would bet that most of their experiences with conflict turn out
negative. That is why this class has
been so helpful. Being able to learn
about different strategies to create positive resolutions after a conflict in
normal, everyday situations has been beyond beneficial. I believe that the more
comfortable be are when dealing with conflict, the less they will fear it. It might take a while to get over that
barrier, however, when one does, they will be able to stay calm and collected
during the tough times. People that are
stubborn about conflict or try to avoid it will never be comfortable when it
occurs. Conflict is something that is inevitable
and once people realize that, they will be better off.
I completely agree with your post and I think that this is exactly what our book was talking about. I really don't know if I had ever even heard the idea that conflict could be a positive experience until I had taken this course. As silly as it sounds, I wish that somehow we could just require everyone to take a course on conflict management because I believe that a lot of relationships could be repaired, and a lot of damage to relationships could be prevented. Not only do people need to realize that conflict is inevitable, but they also need to realize that there are multiple effective ways to handle various conflict situations. Applying these strategies can lead to much better outcomes for everyone involved.
ReplyDeleteYour opening sentence in my mind could not be any more accurate. The more people don’t know how to handle a situation the more people do not understand it. I personally believed I had a good understanding of conflict before this class but I have a whole new level of understanding conflict now that I am done with this class. I AGREE THAT THE MORE COMFORTABLE WE ARE WITH A CONFLICT SITUATION THE LESS WE WILL FEAR IT. I feel that lots of fear comes from not knowing. If someone is unsure about what may happen in a situation the more fear will arise. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more completely! I really do believe that that people view conflict negatively because they don't know how to handle it. It is not something that we are taught like a subject in school. If we were taught how to do handle it since we were little then it would be something that people were more comfortable with. And this class is unlike any other class because we are learning things that we actually are going to use in life! These lessons that we are taught is not just for a score in school but something much bigger than that. I am so happy that someone is able to see this class as beneficial as I do :)
